QMU shortlisted in Green Gown Awards
October 2011

Queen Margaret University, Edinburgh has been shortlisted in the Green Gown Awards 2011 in two categories: Space Efficiency and Green ICT.

The Green Gown Awards, now in their 7th year, recognise exceptional initiatives being taken by universities and colleges across the UK to become more sustainable.

In 2007, Queen Margaret University's purpose built campus in Musselburgh exceeded current environmental standards and set a new benchmark in sustainable design.  Its use of energy saving technology was fundamental in delivering the exemplar energy and environmental performance ratings of the new campus and was recognised by a Green Gown Award in 2009. Since then, the University has continued to drive forward energy efficiencies and maximise its space efficiency be developing a robust integrated Estates and Information strategy which ensures that both the building and IT are recognised as inseparable.

Fraser Muir, Director of Information Services at Queen Margaret University, said: "We are totally committed to climate change and, despite our early success with our energy efficient building and technology, we have not rested on our laurels. We have continued to refine many of our processes to reduce energy consumption and improve space efficiency."

Fraser concluded: "We are delighted that our efforts to not only push our green ICT agenda, but also to drive down costs and make ourselves more energy and space efficient, have been recognised, once again, by the Green Gown Awards."

The Green Gown Awards claim that the standard of entries this year has been truly exceptional, underlining how many excellent initiatives are being undertaken by universities and colleges across the UK to become more sustainable. The finals of the competition will take place on the 3 November 2011.
